It is difficult to answer your question without you giving more details. But I will try. Split ends indicate damage that can come from many things, as overexposure to the elements like sun or cold. It could be from damaging products like bleaching agents, or harsh sprays. The best way to begin is from the inside. Good diet, supplements.
Then look into the products you are using. Then trim off the damaged ends.
Karen,
I have a two part question. The first, what type of flat/straightening iron would you recommend for naturally curly hair? It seems the older I get and the longer my hair gets, the curls seem to deflate so I am always straightening it. But the one that I am using now seems like it creates more frizz and split ends then it does straight hair.
And the second, (a bit embarrassing) I have some broken capillaries around my nasal area. What type of treatment/concealer would you recommend for them? and do you know, if any, what type of laser treatment would be good for them?
Continuous heat on your hair will always be damaging. There are many straightening irons, but the more expensive ones with ceramic plates are the best, with a heat regulating system that you can control, is the best way to go. I have the same problem. The longer my hair gets, the heavier it gets and pulls out the curls. I opt to keep my hair at a length that my curls still have a chance to go crazy. I start by cutting some soft layers through it, so the shorter pieces can curl. Then I use curl enhancing products to bring it back to life.
Broken capillaries are very common. There are laser treatments that can minimize their appearance. One of my best friends has done a series of treatments and look great. I will ask her to give me more details so I can pass them on to you.
K
Thank You Karen, please I would appreciate any information she, you could give me. I am a bit nervous when it comes to any type of laser treatment on my face. I had it done on my legs once, and that was a nightmare, but I digress. There are a few clinics in the Greenville area the specialize in different treatments so I am interested in what treatment she partook in.
And thank you for the info, I will look this weekend for a ceramic iron. And I will definitely go with the soft layers, it takes my hair forever and a day to grow so I was hesitant to cut it but at this point I will try anything.
Are there any curl enhancers that you could recommend? Sorry for all the questions, I am beauty illiterate.

I asked my friend, and it is called Fraxel. Her results for her fine lines and sun damage was amazing. I do not know if this laser would be the treatment for broken capillaries. I had some around my nose also, and my dermatologist zapped them, and they disappeared. It was painless and took 3 seconds. Find the expert in your area.
The trick is not cutting heavy layers in your hair…just soft ones. They layers should not alter the length, or the general look of your hair. The layers will give your hair a lift. I like Paul Mitchell conditioning mousse and use a diffuser on your blow dryer.
Karen Faye: thanks for your advises ! I was told 5 years ago to use a Thermoprotector spay before ironing, AND some silky linseed oil after (only 2 drops spread in the palms of my hands) Any news about better care ? Thank you ! I have another question for you, but it will be better to start a new Q
KarenB. : I was also told ceramic plates are the best when they were out int the market. I love straight hair, but even with ceramic irons your hair will get dried and spoilt if you use it too often. Use some protection always !

Please give me your opinion on hair permanently retexturizes systems (RETEX) and keratin systems. Are they healthy or end up destroying the hair (like always).
Any time you restructure your hair in any way, it does some damage. It isn’t always the initial treatment that does the most damage. It is the upkeep that usually does the most damage, if you aren’t careful. Go to someone extremely qualified for your touch ups, get regular trimmings, and be cautious with products while styling. My best advise for keeping your hair healthy, is to always go along with what nature has given you, and do minimal enhancements.
I think your advice is very wise, It’s best to let my natural hair and I keep it short because it’s easy to handle. (Before I used so long as you, but three years ago I suffer from carpal tunnel and couldn’t dry it or comb long hair).
Thanks so much. =)

Karen, thank you for this opportunity. I would like to ask you what is your best advice for a woman with acne-prone (oily) skin. Is there any effective treatment? I am not a teenager any more (since a long time ago LOL) but still have problems with this skin condition… I have tried Neutrogena products, Clarins, OXY-10, for years, but it still the same =(…
Thank you in advance, ILY!
Acne usually is a result of hormones. It is always best to look within. Start with exercise and good hydration. Then find a good cleansing regime for the surface. I found that ProActive works quite well. You also must be cautious NOT to use products that tend to overly dry out your natural oils. Your skin may over compensate and produce more oil. It is best to find a good dermatologist to do a thorough analysis of your particular problems. If you have a certain accute type of acne there is Accutane, which is taken internally. It is a last resort, but I have seen amazing and lasting results for extreme cases. You MUST be under a doctors care for Accutane.
I had to wait until after I hit menopause to have clear skin, but now I have wrinkles.
Karen, I used to use astringent lotions with alcohol (in order to get rid of the oil in my skin), but they dried my skin very much and then, the problem was even worst! I had pimples and very irritated/sensitive/redish skin.
I will follow all your advises, and I’ll look for a good dermatologist. Thank you so much!! Hugs! God bless you.
It is always good to pay attention to ALL of your skin, including your neck and décolletage. I never found it necessary to fall prey to the cosmetic companies ploy for spending a lot of money on many products. You can spend a fortune on Creme de la Mer, or there are many drug store brands that work just fine. I am fond of Aveeno products.
Ok, thanks. I see so many creams out there devoted to just the neck, and I’m noticing more and more that that is a very delicate area. Glad to know that you think the cheaper brands do the trick.

Hi Karen! First off, I love that you started a blog! I send you all my love and support and thank you for taking us along your amazing journey
My questions are about concealers and foundation.
I have had the hardest time looking for the right concealer for me because everything seems to cake up and settle into my lines. The best one I’ve tried so far is Make Up For Ever Camouflage in NO. 13. It goes on smoother than any other ones I’ve tried but I still feel like it isn’t giving me the results I want. It somehow looks muddy… if that makes sense. Do you have any suggestions on any of your favorite brands I should try that has worked on your clients?
My next question is foundation. I’ve been using Smashbox HD FX foundation in L3 and Make Up For Ever HD Foundation in #120. The results of mediocre. I find that by the end of the day my foundation has sort of worn off leaving me muddy looking (even though I set my foundation with my Lancome Dual Finish Powder) and it also starts to settle in my lines and dry skin. I’m wondering what foundations you like to use that lasts longer and also has a more natural look to it.
I have never used Smashbox foundations so I can not give you a good evaluation. I do love Makeup Forever HD foundations. I find they hold up very well, and never seem to shift colorations even when used in grueling long production days.
We must be realistic also. Many issues depend on the condition of the skin underneath, this may be an issue to consider. (do you use a moisturizer?) Makeup is not made to be a permanent fix, and does need touching up throughout the day.
It sounds like you are having a “build up issue”. I am really loving Makeup Forevers PURE WATER. It cleanses excess makeup but leaves skin feeling moist. Moisten a cotton pad with Pure Water and wipe over your face in the middle of the day and remove the excess build up especially what settles in your creases, and then do a touch up.
I LOVE Yve St. Laurents TOUCHE ECLAT concealer!
Congratulations on the blog and thanks for sharing your beauty expertise. Do you have any suggestions for fading discolorations, especially the ones caused by the sun? I never leave the house without sunscreen, but some of the damage from my teenage years is starting to appear. If only I had known then that I would pay a steep price for the tan when I hit middle age, lol. Thanks.
Join the club. Unfortunately, when I was young no one really impressed upon us all the damage the sun could do. I answered a question earlier. I have a friend that had Fraxel laser treatments that worked minor miracles on her sun damage and fine lines. If you want to go this route, make sure you find experts in the field of lasers, because there are a lot of unqualified people doing it.
There are many other products that can minimize discolorations containing Vitiamin A acid. There are many strengths, so again it is advisable to ask your dermatologist. Used incorrectly your skin will redden and turn into a peeling mess. It is also is sun sensitive.
Hi Karen,
I have very thick curly hair that is starting to turn gray. My hairdresser still thinks it’s too soon to color my hair completely so she has been giving me permanent color highlights to try and cover some of the gray but I still have more gray hair than I would like. She is worried that coloring my hair completely will dry it out too much. What is your advice?
Thanks!
xo
Ruba
If the gray hair makes you uncomfortable…I would color it all. Since you only color the roots as your hair grows and usually do not have to color over hair that has already been colored it should not be a problem. Just use gentle shampoos and good conditioners. Keeping your hair trimmed regularly will also keep it healthy looking.
Thank you for your response to ruba777 and my question.
A friend at work (currently in her late 30s) has prematurely gray hair and has colored it for years. Unfortunately, it’s very dried out, like brown straw. I’ve never colored my hair before, and I’ve dreaded the idea of having the same result. You mentioned keeping the hair trimmed, I smiled at this since I have very long, thick hair. (To be cut in a couple of months and donated to “Locks-of-Love.” Their O.K. with some gray hair…:-) Could you recommend a gentle shampoo and conditioner? I’m too embarrassed to mention what I use currently.
I really like Rene Furterer shampoos and conditioners. The Karite shampoo is for dry hair. Not only does this line address your locks, it also helps nourish and takes care of your scalp…where it all originates. I also use their Carthame oil on the hair before adding color….it’s added protection.
Thank you very much!!….:-) I’m in the process of searching for a retail outlet for the Karite shampoo and Carthame oil as I type. Also, thank you for taking the time to respond to each of our questions on your new blog! It’s great to be able to communicate with you this way. Thank you for allowing it!! I’ve enjoyed reading the comments and questions from all the guests on your site so far. What an encouragement it must be for you. Happy blogging!!!…:-)

Karen, I would like to ask your opinion about wrinke “filllers”, like “Restylane”. Is it effective? Does it look natural? Thank you so much in advance.
I’m looking forward to Karen’s reply to your question. I have curly hair and the older I am the drier my hair is. I always use a conditioner or a mask after washing it, I use a hair oil, but despite of it my hair is crepe rubber when I don’t use a straightening iron. Could you recommend a special products for me?
Thank you.
Jarmila
There are different reasons for hair to get dry and brittle. I have made this suggestion previously. Many times there is a build up of products suffocating the cuticle, preventing your hair from benefiting from the conditioners you are applying. Do a 1/2 apple cider vinegar, 1/2 water rinse through your hair about every 2 months. Once your cuticle is cleansed….then use your conditioning treatments with heat.
STYLING PRODUCTS: I use Paul Mitchell’s conditioning mousse (for control and lift), and KMS hairplay molding paste(for moisture and curl control) on the ends of my hair….then use a defuser on your blowdryer….

Hi Karen,
Thank you for the wonderful blog:)
I have a question about my hair. I used to have curly, frizzy, rough, thick brown hair (I love curly hair) which I took care of with deep conditioning, regular washing and good diet(nuts and proteins). However, over the last 4 yrs (post accident) I have been loosing clumps of hair everyday and they have become thin and a little straight. My diet is still the same and intake of water has increased.
Can you advise me on what should be consumed to make my hair healthy or what should be applied externally to stop them from falling?
It sounds like you are like me. More than likely, this is a stress related issue. I loose my hair when my body is traumatized in any way. When Michael died, my hair fell out by the hand full. This is call telogen hair loss. The ratio of growing hairs and resting hairs shifts greatly. It usually begins 3 months after the trauma, and continues for about 3 month. There is not much to do, but ride it out. I do find that a supplement made from grapes called RESVERATROL works remarkably well at restoring color (from gray) and the health of hair. It is the concentrated version of the antioxidant that is so beneficial in red wine.
Thank you so much K
I looked back at the pattern of my hair fall and you are right. It definitely is related to stress in these four years and even now. Need to control it somehow. Can the hair regrow if the stress is pushed back and RESVERATROL is taken? or is there any other way? I want my hair back :’(

Hi Karen, thank you so much for your blog and for sharing your priceless experience with us.
If you’ll have time please give me an advice.
I have long, not colored, not greasy hair. But the ends are so dry that when i’m letting my hair down it looks horrible: one half is very smooth and shiny and the other looks like a straw . I’m making different masks, using balsams and oils. Nothing helps. So i have to cut the ends regularly but as they grow everything starts again.
First, you should trim your ends on a regular basis. Without knowing what is drying out your hair, I can only recommend to use a leave in conditioner on the parts that are drying out. Sometimes there could be a buildup of products and conditioners that are coating your hair, and preventing helpful conditioners from working. This happens to me, and my hair gets lifeless. I rinse my hair with mixture of 1/2 apple cider vinegar and 1/2 water about every 2 months. This natural rinse will dissolve the build up on the cuticle of your hair shafts. Then put a good conditioner on your hair, especially where it is dry, and add heat. This will allow the conditioner to penetrate and actually do it’s job.
1. I have a few “red” moles, one of the side of my left temple and a few on my decolletage area. I wondered what causes them, and if I can have the one on my face removed safely?
2. what type of soap do you use to wash your makeup brushes, and how often should I wash them??
1. I am not an expert @ diagnosing moles. You should always, always, always have your moles looked at by a dermatologist on a regular basis. There are many types of skin cancers and many degrees. I am prone to Basel cell, and have a doctor inspect my entire body on a yearly basis. When I have them removed right away, it is an easy and painless procedure. When anyone sees a difference in an area of your skin, that doesn’t heal or go away…it is always best to check it out. Most of the time it is nothing, but some sort of sun damage that is unsightly rather than something harmful.
2. You should wash your brushes at least once a month if you are the only one using them. I wash my professional brushes between each client. The easiest way to wash them is with dish-soap (it dissolves grease easily) in cool water. Sometimes hot water will break down glues that hold your brush hairs to the handle. Make sure you rinse the soap thoroughly. Then dip brush tips in alcohol. I like to rinse them once again, before I form the bristles in their proper position and let them air dry.
thanks! – I know, I do need to go to the dermo — there not really moles, there those red freckles, or beauty marks that some get… once I get to the docs, I’ll let you know the advice I get
I am a natural redhead with fair skin. I have always had trouble finding appropriate make-up colors (cheek, lip and eye) for my hair and skin tone. I basically stick to browns but would like to branch out a little. What colors do you recommend, both for day and night looks?
I hear you…being a natural redheaded beauty is tricky, when finding the right shades. You are correct in staying with earthy tones for your eyes. They will be the most natural looking on you. I happen to also love the earthy green tones. Green is the opposite of red tone, so greenish tones will compliment the reds. I prefer more to the olive and gray greens and not teals.
At night I would go towards deep smokey lavenders for drama.
I think a soft pink gel or creme blush on the apples of your cheeks will just add some brightness….but remember to blend in and be subtle.
I would use neutral and light natural shades on your lips…more to the pale pinky browns glosses.
Lipliner? to do or not to do? I seem to have problems with certain lipsticks wanting to ‘bleed’ outside of the natural arch of my lips without it. What would you recommend? Also, how do I pick a red lipstick that is the right shade for me?
And is it to much to ask for a page on your blog with a video “how to”? hehe.
That’s a great idea…I do have a Flip cam. I am just learning here.
This blog is a work in progress.
Lipliner is a DO….but you have to match the lip color you are using. Try dusting a little of your face powder over the lip pencil before applying the lipstick. That will help keep it in place. Nothing is more uncool than to see that dark line outlining your lips…..
Picking the right red is always a delicate issue, because it can look very WRONG if you choose incorrectly. There are blue-reds, and yellow-reds, brown-reds and pure reds. The safest red to choose, is a true red. Even though the others can work….it is easy to make a mistake. Shu Uemura makes some nice reds in nice textures. (M 165). It’s pretty yucky if your red lipstick is too gooey and your hair sticks to it, or it bleeds up to your nose, or gets all over your teeth.
Thanks Karen, I will definitely heed your advice concerning the red lipstick as you have just described my worst nightmares concerning them. But will promise to take a picture should it bleed up to my nose. haha.
I appreciate every aspect of your blog and the time that you spend answering all our questions. So, I will wait, patiently for the “how to’s.”

Karen-
I have used Lancome Duel Finish powder for years and love, love, love it. What type of moisturizer should I use to keep it from settling into the lines around my eyes? It seems to make them more visible. I don’t want to change my foundation because I really like how it covers and how simple it is to use. Thank-you for any help you can provide.
Lancome Dual Finish has great coverage, but it may be too heavy to use around those tiny wrinkles around your eyes. As we age, powders in these areas will accentuate the fine lines. You can refrain from using powder under your eyes all together, or use an extremely finely milled powder, like KohGenDo Maifanshi pressed powder from Japan. http://www.kohgendocosmetics.com/
Hi Karen!
My sister is getting married!! (In a year) and she’s REALLY nervous about her skin. She has these breakouts where she basically has one huge zit (and sometimes others around too. She has tried proactive and many other things but it doesn’t help (oddly).
I don’t want her to be sad at her wedding!! Do you know what she can do to improve her skin? Maybe something she should do all year long until the big day? She eats really healthy and has been trying to get some workouts in.. so we just really don’t know what it is.
I would love to help her out!
love,
Nathalie.
Most break outs are hormonal. If the break outs are before or during her menstrual cycle…it is a good indicator that this is the case. I do not recommend it for use every month, because it is not wise to take antibiotics due to the fact you can build up a dangerous tolerance, but maybe a dermatologist can prescribe some for the weeks prior to the wedding to help prevent a break out. Also a dermatologist can also inject cortisone, an anti swelling agent, into a large pimple which will make it disappear within 24 hours or less, if she happens to get prior to the wedding.
Accutane is another alternative, but you MUST NOT risk pregnancy during the time you are taking it, because it is dangerous for the fetus. It is a very powerful drug that need monitoring closely by a doctor.
Always consult a dermatologist when using anything other than over the counter remedies.
I love your blog! I can’t wait to learn more from you. (And thank you for being a great friend to Michael <3 You must have meant the world to him.)
love,
Nathalie

Hello Karen, thanks for giving advices like that..I have a question : I am a singer and am looking for good stage makeup that won’t “drip” too much (sorry for my bad english, i’m french) because of the heat and that would be not too aggressive on the skin or on the eyes ( i wear contact lenses)…Do you have any particular brand of makeup that could be useful to me?
Thanks again!
Have a great day
Karen, my hair is healthy, wavy, not curly, it’s rather easy to brush and iron it. But I’ve been thinking about getting it straightened through a permanent technique… so :
1) which technique is the best to this purpose ? Is there anything like ACTUAL straightening which doesnt need any additional brushing or ironing ?
2) do you think my hair will loose brightness or health ?
3) what brings less damage : to keep on brushing/ironing every 2 days OR to use those chemicals once in a while ? how often do you need to get it done to maintain the hair straight ?
Thank you in advance
!. The Japanese thermal straightening usually doesn’t need as much as the other methods, but you must find experts to do this for you, and it is very expensive.
2. Anytime you chemically alter your hair, it will loose it’s health, and usually it is the touch ups that break down the hair the most.
3. So much is relative to the strength and health going into it, and the methods that are used to straighten it. Extreme care is needed. The least amount of heat and avoiding products containing alcohol or drying agents, and not overlapping the straightening agents when doing touch ups.
It sounds like your hair is perfect as it is. If it is wavy and combs easily, it should be easily managed and have a lot of versatility that can be pressed straight or enhance the waves. Your chances of loosing the perfection that you already have is great, by using chemicals.
Thanks Karen, I’ll do some research on that, as well as on Moroccan oil.
I like my hair, it’s just that I wish it was straight most of the time lol. I also have a layers cut, so the waves do their job without the need to work on them that much. But you know… it always seem that women want for their hair what nature didnt give lol. Thanks ! <3
Dear Karen:
Thank you for sharing your beauty knowledge and the gift that is Michael with us.
My biggest problem has always been my really oily hair and face. I can sort of deal with the shine on my face and I always have tissues in hand to blot away the extra oil, but my hair needs to be washed every single day or otherwise it looks like I haven’t washed it for a week, my scalp gets itchy (not dry itchy) and it feels generally nasty. Sometimes I have to do intense travelling on the account of my job and I don’t have time to shampoo everyday. When that happens I have to hide my hair or I would be embarrassed to be seen. I try not to touch it with my hands too much because I know that makes it worse. I don’t eat greasy foods either. Is there anything you can recommend, any product I can use, anything at all that can help me alleviate this problem?
Thank you in advance for your time.
Marissa
Marissa, on the bright side, your type of skin seems to never age, but on on the other hand it seems it is a problem now.
Your instinct is always to dry out the oil, but many times by trying to do this, your body over compensates by creating more oil, when drying products are used. I personally do not have an answer because this is an issue that should be looked at and dealt with by a dermatologist.
Perhaps you can style your hair in cute ponytails, where a gel or grease product is actually used to style it. http://www.hairstylestalk.com/images/ponytail-hair2.jpg http://ponytailhairstyles.blogspot.com/
Thank you Karen, I’ll take confort in the idea that someday I’ll be a youthful looking grandmother LOL
I haven’t wore ponytails since I was in high school, but I’ve tried some of the styles in the website you recommended and they look very cute!
Thanks again for your time.
Love from Thousand Oaks, CA.

Some time ago,I got stress induced exzema including on my scalp. Results clumps of hair falling out and general thinning of the hair.My hairdresser used KeraCare for dry and itchy scalp on me,and it worked wonders!!! the exzema went(also cause i figured out what caused it and brought it under control) and i have a full head of (to) thick hair again. You should be able to get this product at your salon, and don’t be surprised if they say if it’s for african ladies.I am not african, but it did the trick
Thank you so much for sharing this with us Sonja. Many products that are made for Black clients are excellent for everyone. I often use or suggest them for my clients with dry or curly hair. They are so pleasantly surprised, and would have NEVER considered that they would work for them. KeraCare is an excellent line for dry hair and scalp. http://www.avlon.com/keracare.html
Karen to see if I could help, I have as many black spots on the nose, and I do not like, I bought all sorts of creams and maintain skin hygiene much, do you know if you can remove the blackheads from the nose ? I hope you understand me.
Extractions should be done by dermatologist or extremely qualified facial technicians. Your skin needs to cleansed and steamed so your pours are open and the surface of your skin is very clean, before they are removed.
These are caused by a collection of oil and dirt getting into your pours to clog them.
There are many deep cleansing facial masks that you can use on just the areas where you get them, that will help draw out the impurities to help keeping them from returning.
Sometimes your moisturizer can be adding to your problem. You may want to avoid putting your moisturizer on the problem areas. Most of us have a combination of skin type on our faces alone, and these areas should be addressed in different manners.
Hi Karen, I’m so happy to be a part of this community.
I’m still in the book ‘Blog’s for Dummies’, but I’m a trooper and will get the hang of it. I’ve just read through this thread and I have learned so many helpful things.
I don’t like spending a lot of money on store bought products for the skin. Do you have any alternative methods, for instance, using food, or combinations of foods, or plants, topically to help keep your skin, especially the face, neck, and hands soft and healthy? I know there are other resources for finding recipes, and I have experimented, but I was curious if you go this route at times. Beauty comes from within, and I do get good sources of nutrition and lots of water, but of course the surface needs attention as well. My skin is basically dry. Do you have something you can share with us, if so, hopefully it’s nothing too yummy that will wind up in my mouth, instead of on my face.
Yes, Yes Yes….go to the Health food store and get coconut oil. It is wonderful on your skin and hair. When it is cool, it is solid. When it warms up in your hands it turns all yummy and liquidy.
I apply warm coconut oil on my scalp an hour before shampoo

Hello everybody,

How I have to do to walk with it… Can somebody tell me?
I adore you, Gans. I have missed you. Your continuous struggle in heels always brings me joy. I apologize for making your challenge my giggles.
If you can’t bear them…don’t wear them. It is such a shame that something that looks so hot, is such an obstacle, isn’t it?
The first thing you must do is choose for comfort. I have actually found heels that fit well and can be comfortable. Then they must be secure on your feet. Then it’s practice, practice, practice.

I have missed you too.

Gans, I love high heels too, and I found that those with a little platform midsole are way much comfortable than those who have plain sole. That platform midsole can be visible, ir hidden inside the shoe. You’ll understand when you see this pic ( sexy, huh?) Look for a soft lining and a good cushioning footbed. http://www.shoes.com/Shopping/ProductDetails.aspx?p=EC1001211&pg=5125133
Hope it helps ! <3

Hi Karen, it’s very nice to be able to ask some advices directly to a professional
so here’s my question.
I’m a dark-blond and I was dying my hair for years to be platin-blond now of course my hair is dry. I’m letting grow without dying it but I need a very good conditioner now and I often heard about home-made conditioner made of olive oil, eggs and honey. Is it really good for the hair or maybe you know another receipe that is effective ?
Forgive me for “piggy-backing” on your question. This would be very interesting to know. Back in the day, my mother used beer when she washed her hair. Sometimes mixed with eggs. Yikes! I’ve never done this myself since I don’t care for the smell of beer, but she swore by it!
Mayonnaise is good, but you smell like a salad. It has the egg and oil. I can’t imagine how hard all that with the honey would be to get out. I opt for a pump bottle of Crema.
So, I tried the conditioner : olive oil, honey, vinaigre and an eggs, I let it on my head all night wrapped in cellophane, and it worked! well I have to do that again of course, but my hair is shiny and sweet.
And it wasn’t hard to wash at all, just one rising and a shampoo. (or two for the smell lol)

Dear Karen, How is the best way to hide the “bags” (puffiness) under the eyes? How do you “camouflage” that problem with make up? Thank you so much in advance. ILY
Make up only covers discolorations, not swelling. If you try to cover swelling it usually just makes it look worse. In Hollywood we use PREPARATION H cream, not gel. It is made to lessen the swelling of hemorrhoidal tissue. This area is very sensitive, just like your under eyes.
Thank you for the information of this website! Hugs to you

I have a beauty question for you. First, take a close look at my avatar. I’ll give you a minute…Did you look? Okay, then here’s my beauty question: HEEEELLLLLPPPPP?
Dear Karen, about eyelining … I use Revlon’s Coffee Bean pencil, which is a dark smokey brown. I’m not fond of black eyeliner cause my look gets too heavy. I never wear eyeshadow, not even for a night look. I do my own version of subtle smokey eyes for the day, and I intensify the effect for the night. I would love to know some of your tips to get THE smokey look for the day.
BTW, I’ll second KarenBrake’s suggestion to have a page for “HowTo” videos
Thank you very much ! <3
find a brown powder shadow that matches the color of your pencil. After applying your pencil, do a layer of powder over. Using a clean finger, q-tip, or makeup sponge, smudge slightly outward from your line.
If you want to get fancier, also buy a lighter brown shade of shadow you can apply over your entire lid, before doing the above.
Hi Karen! Do you ever exfoliate your scalp? If so, how? I’ve read that people use sugar/brown sugar, but I’m worried that it would cause breakage?? I’m just wondering, because I try not to shampoo my hair too often (I have dry curly hair, and I fear the sulfates in most shampoos will dry it out), instead I kinda scrub with conditioner, but that doesn’t help with the dead skin/oil build up. I use my nails, and that kinda sorta works, but I’d like something more effective if that makes sense. Also, again regarding curly hair (my curls are pretty tight) what’s your opinion on combing it? I usually only comb my hair out of the shower if I actually decide to use gel (which is very, rare), but usually I comb it in the shower after I’ve put in conditioner, and then I kind of finger comb it after I take my hair out of the towel turban thing. Also (lastly for now) are there any natural/eco friendly/cruelty free cosmetic/hair lines you like/recommend? Specifically ones that aren’t expensive??
In beauty school we learned to give a scalp treatment. We used a rubber comb (not sharp) and holding the comb on a slight angle, used circular motions, loosening the dead skin. It feels really good done correctly.
Renee Furterer has a wonderful scalp oil from their Karite line for dry scalp. This is good to gently rub into your scalp after removing the dry skin.
I only comb curly hair once, to remove tangles after washing. Between washings, I like to only use my hands, to fluff, detangle and style. Renee Furterer products are so much cheaper in France. I find they are well worth the price.
Hi Karen
Here is my problem and it’s a difficult one…….
Since i’m eleven years old ( and i’m 28 now) i have acnee on (believe me or not) a very dry and pale skin…….
I got all the creams and gel cleanser ever……some of them completely dryed my skin and it was so painful and irritated that i had to stop using them.
My skin is also extremly sensitive. I can’t go to the sun ( i always wear high sun protection) and during winter the skin on my nose destroys itself and falls…Well it’s horrible……Do you have any idea or do i have to accept th
Hi Fran, trying to dry out your skin is not the answer. Surface blemishes are causes by bacteria and clogged pores from over active oil glands, or things like lanolin in your moisturizers. Most acne problems are created by your hormones. The answer will be in finding the correct “balance” for you. I cannot find that for you. You do need to see a good dermatologist. You may have to bring up the idea with your doctor about your hormones. I find many dermatologists only want to treat you topically. There is an answer for you out there. It just may take some perseverance and finding the right doctor who is dedicated to helping you.
Dear Karen,
Have u ever tried Mane n’ Tail shampoo? read good revs abt it, im thinking of giving it a shot.. my hair falls out a lot n i get it highlighted, so its pretty dried out. if u knw anything, pleas pass it on.
Thx & Have a great day
Karen,
May I ask what your thoughts are on microdermabrasion or chemical peels? and also, what can I do about larger pores around the nose and chin area? aside from a dermatolgist, is there any good over the counter/at home solutions?
There are some light chemical peels that can be done with no down time that can remove the top layer of dead skin cells, and really freshen your look.
The results from lasers that I am seeing sure get my vote over the dermabrasion and deep chemical peels for actually resurfacing.
Pore issues cannot be dealt with home solutions other than filling them with the primers before you apply your foundations.
Dear Karen, do you have any expiriences with MAC-cosmetics?
Is there a similar Make Up like the HD-Foundation from MUF? Bc somehow we don’t have any MUF products here anymore and everybody is telling me that MAC has “won” the competition between the two brands…and I am very dissapointed now bc I have LOVED the products from MUF and am a little sceptic towards the MAC ones now… .
I ask this bc I am also a Make Up Artist and we are shooting a lot in HD and I don’t have much experiences with MAC…or maybe you will have another advice/brand for me? Would be great!
Thank you and lots of L.O.V.E.
I have had a lot of experience with Mac cosmetics. I never liked their foundations. They broke down, and the emulsions separated, and I was never fond of the color choices. I like some of their lipstick shades and do use their pressed blot powder on the set. Are you from Australia? When I was there, I was told by a makeup artist she could no longer get Makeup Forever, and was forced to use Mac, because it was the most professional makeup available. I have NEVER heard of MAC winning a competition. The judges couldn’t have been professionals.
I highly recommend Makeup Forever. You can order it and have it sent. If Makeup Forever won’t send it to you…. http://www.makeupforever.com/
call my favorite supply store http://www.nigelbeauty.com/
99% of my makeup kit is Makeup Forever.
Thank you for the information Karen
Yes, I think so too the judges couldn’t have been professionals (probably it was said by MAC-Staff )
All right, lots of LOVE to you and if you shall ever need an assistant just let me know

….including eyeliner? Hehehe, I’m still lookin’ for THE perfect liner !
I asked you about natural remedies for dry skin recently. You suggested coconut oil and good gracious, I was smooth as a slick criminal.
From the top: If anyone inherited all the parts of the body that need special attention that would be lucky me. By staying in the food and plant family, what would you suggest for extremely dry, thick but thin, curly, kinky, frizzy, possessed hair. I was born with all of this but Preference by L’Oreal. I have tons of body, but only in Denver. I am Caucasian, and I use to relax my hair back in the day, but now at the half-century mark… enough of that. I even galloped through the years letting it have its own way… well enough of that too. Should I ditch the flat iron and go back to rollers and hairdryer? That is soooo 70s.
Can you suggest a natural conditioner that I can get out of the Frig, pantry, garden, smoke house, dog pen?
you know…I have not experimented much with the stuff in my pantry because there are so many wonderful products in my favorite beauty supply store. You can certainly use the coconut oil on your hair. The gorgeous island women have been using it since they could get their men to climb the palms and throw them down to them…and you know how beautiful their hair is. I use it when I am at the beach or around the pool. It keeps my hair lovely during the summer months.
I’ll try the coconut oil. That’s a wonderful idea to wear it on the beach where the sun can warm the oil to penetrate the hair and scalp. I’m usually very active on the beach, so I’ll wrap it or get horizontally still. Sometimes oil is harder to wash out for me than crèmes. I read your previous reply on how to give a scalp treatment. I’ll try the coconut oil before trying Renee Furterer’s Karite line. Thanks for sharing that link.
Next time Jeff and I are around coconut trees, I’ll see if I can get him to climb one and toss ‘um down without falling out or hitting me in the head. *smile*
I’ve read all your beauty precious advices, now it’s time to put them in practice (more difficult !)
I have 2 questions for you, if you can answer it will be fine :
First, if you know about acide hyaluronique and what do you think about it ; if it should be taken by caps or as a skin care or the two combined ? I heard it was good !
Second, how do you protect yourself from the sun (face, body and hair) because I’m preparing my holidays in Marocco (next month) so it would be useful for me… Hi, hi hi… and for everyone who enjoys the sun !!!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you and have a beautiful day !
I have never taken hyaluronic acid. It is mostly used for arthritis or degenerative joint conditions. It is the natural viscosity that lubricates our joints and can be found in many of our organs. Most of the hyaluronic acid is made from the combs of chickens. I have never taken it, so I do not know if helps the skin or not. I had a client that had injections into her joint and found it helped for up to 6 months.
Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and lightweight clothing to protect yourself from the harmful rays of the sun. Make sure you keep well hydrated.
I really love reading your blog. I already learned a lot from your answers. Its great that you share your wisdom and expertise with us. That truly is a gift, which I really appreciate.
I would like to know about the best way to apply foundation.
Normally I use my fingers or a foundation sponge for it. A fashion for applying foundation seems to be the stippling brush. What do you think of the stippling brush and what would you recommend?
Professionally, I use a makeup brush, and then do smoothing details with a sponge.
At home on myself I rarely use a foundation unless I am going somewhere special in the evening. I use the same on myself at home too. But the warmth of your finger, sometimes does a better job blending into the skin, especially around your eye area. Make sure you use your little finger, it is the weakest and least likely to pull delicate eye tissue. Tap gently and the makeup will melt into your skin for the most natural appearance.
Thank you for the answer Karen. I agree with you the warmth of the fingers is a very good way to blend in foundation and looks more natural. So I won’t buy this stippling brush, don’t need it.
I also don’t use foundation that often. Mostly when I go out in the evenings or to special events, like you. During work and daytime I like to use a light tinted moisturizer. Its easier/faster to apply for me and looks natural. I don’t like to spend much time on make up in the mornings, I rather sleep longer.
Big Kiss and have a wonderful day

Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeena(15:37:44) :
Karen, do you prefer glossy lips or matte lips? What’s considered more natural looking?
Also, I just have a few “get to know Karen the makeup artist better” type questions. I know that makeup artists say they’re supposed to focus on a client’s best feature, but I’ve noticed among my friends who are makeup artist, they all tend to a feature they single out. Some single out cheeks, but most single out lips or especially eyes. Is there a feature you tend to single out on most clients/yourself? If so, which feature and why? Also, is there an era of makeup you really like? One MA friend of mine really likes the classic beauty of the ’50s, another really likes the freedom of the ’80s (which of course YOU were a big part of). I find it funny that in terms of fashion, the ’80s is often ridiculed, yet makeup artists love the ’80s because there was so much freedom of expression. Is there an era you like/particularly influences you? If so why? Sorry if my questions are annoying, but these are some things I’ve been wanting to ask you for months.
I like moist lips. Lips that are inviting. I think glossy lips look to unnatural and I think guys are not drawn to kissing them and getting all that goo all over them.
As an artist, I like to highlight the beauty and uniqueness that an individual possesses. I love to correct things that draw attention away from the perfection that everyone has. It is only a technique that you bring attention to one feature, because to do more makes someone look overly made up. To me the art of makeup and hair is making each person shine in their own individual uniqueness and not making them a fashion cookie cutter.
I am not fond of any particular era, more than another really. They are all fun. There is really nothing new under the sun either. I find styles from the 50′s that are easily used in the 2010′s. It’s more about mood and personal style. We are back again with all the big false lashes of the 60′s.
If I had to choose I really like the hairstyle’s and makeup during the XVIII century…even the clothes…on the guys too!!!!
Thanks Karen! Very interesting. So, is there a trend other than goopy/glossy lips you dislike? Btw, I also don’t like too much gloss, bugs get stuck! (though, there is a gloss (lip butter) from Korres I like -yay gift cards! a great thing about having a bunch of family that doesn’t understand you at all- it’s all natural, no mineral oil/petroleum and smells GREAT…anyway the gloss isn’t very sticky or glossy…but yeah. What don’t you like? LOL! Hope you don’t mind…I’m just curious, odd, and slightly insane, but you know that…
So true Meghan… though I’ve to say I also love XVIII century clothes… because back then size didn’t matter

Dear Karen,
I’m sooooo happyyyyy to find you here!!!! and to ask beauty questions to a professional like you!!!!!!
Usually make up artists recommend foundation but even thouhg I understand that it covers the imperfections, I’m always afraid foundations in general give an unnatural look. I use Make Up forever HD (I like it very much because it looks quite natural) but do you think even with this one there is the risk looking unnatural? When do you recommend to use foundation and when not? Sometimes I apply just a little bit of powder on the cheeks! My eyes are dark brown; my hair also are dark brown with some red reflection and I have pale skin. What tones exalt my natural features?
Thank you for your patience and kindness, Karen. With loveeeeee, alwayssss!!!!!!!!

Karen, thank you for being such a GIFT to us, and thank you for this blog. It’s very generous of you to make your presence available and to offer your thoughts and advice. <3
I want to ask you about eyebrows … what would you advise for the beauty basics of eyebrows (like shaping, supplies to use, treatments that I should know of, etc.)?? I got my eyebrows waxed at a salon, and then after that, I have kept its shape with a tweezer and have used my eyeliner to fill in where "vacant" spots are. I strive for the natural look. For now, I am not yet ready for the permanent tatoo-like eyebrows that my aunts have gotten (my aunts are look pretty, but I would prefer the more natural look).
Thank you in advance, Karen.

Dear Karen
I am new on this community and I hope to make a right question…
I am looking for the perfect scent…it must be fresh, floreal and particular…I wear sometimes BAV but for me it’s too “Old Fashioned” and not good for summer period…what can you suggest?
Thank you so much,
Katia
I’ve been invited to my manager’s 40th birthday bash, and I’d like to wear eye make-up that looks evening-y to it. But my trouble is that the skin on my lids and just above them tend to get red and a bit flakey after I’ve worn eye shadow. And I do take the make-up off at the end of the day, and rinse with water. So I tend to go for the boring look most of the time. :p Any advice for sensitive skin?
Sinead
Actually, since I posted this, there has been a big improvement with my skin around my eyes… I think it’s because I’ve been getting more excercise. Now I can even wear a little eye shadow during the day! I didn’t realise I was so run-down. x
I wonder why you put brighter consealer on the bridge of MJ’s nose than on the sides? Was it a way to controll the look of the shape or to change illusion of the size? I have myself had one rhinoplasty and I would like to make it look more straight than what it is, also the tip of his nose seem brighter in some pictures, is it to make it more smooth around the edges? I have a pretty round nose tip and would like to make it look more sharp.
As you might expect I’m a fan and been a fan for 20years. I like the whole androgynous look but I do it in a natural looking way, sometimes I smudge just a hint of eyeliner on the lower part of my eyelids to make it look more enhanced but mascara would be too much, do you recommend colouring the eyelashes instead with a permanent solution, would that look more natural? I am a person with middleeastern looks so I do have dark hair but it is a bit to the brown side.
Final and most important question, I think the sideburns and babyhair MJ had look real nice, the way it almost whent like a triangle from the tip of his sideburns to the middle of his forehead and back to a bit above his ear, can I (with almost no babyhair) get something to that affect? This is the thing I have tried to get that I belive is the hardest, I have asked many hair stylist but they dont really understand how he has it, it seems as if he enhances it himself by folding his hair away from the babyhair and like with some kind of product sticking it to his skin, it is always shiny so I guessed maybe with gel?
I would love to know how I could do something like that artificially, thank you for your time and thank you for your loyalty to him.
Hello KAREN !
I only want to say “bonjour” and “Hello” to you. I m new on this blog and it’s so amazing to speak with you!
Sorry about my english (I’m french)
Hi Karen!
Just a couple quick questions for you :0) I have freckels but now I am started to get a couple of hyperpigmented spots, one being near my hair line. Is there something you can recommend for that to cover it? Also, I am now trying to indulge my girlie side and start to wear makeup again. I have fair skin (not pale, just fair) with slight roscea, light brown eyes and brown hair with natural copper highlights. Is there any colors that you can recommend to get me started? I am at a complete loss on this as there is so much out there right now..lol! I am definetly in to the more natural look but have no idea where to begin. Thank you so much for starting this blog, it is so good to see you doing well. <3 Samantha
Hi Karen, hope you’re doing fine..
I have a question …I am a brunette but I have a very pale skin..I never get any tan in summer …and I have always wondered what type of fondation I should choose..do I need to look for something very close to my natural color ? (when I do that I usually get a comment like “oh you’re from the adams family??..lol) or do I need to find something darker? I have also tried that but never got a natural result out of it….I should also say that it’s not for an everyday use but for a stage use..
Thanks again Karen!
I saw where you recommended Makeup Forever HD foundation. I’d been searching for a new one and decided to give this a try. I LOVE IT. With my super fair complexion it’s hard to get a color that isn’t too dark, wash me out, or make me more pink. I got Ivory (forget the number), on the suggestion of a saleslady. This is the best ever! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
Karen, I need some advice on applying eye liner. I’ve tried both liquids and pencils and prefer pencils. Some pencils come with a smudger, but if I use that, I end up with raccoon eyes. I don’t wear much makeup, but I’d like to start and I need as many tips as you’re willing to give! Thank you so much.
Karen,
What is the key to a perfectly shaped brow? I usually get mine waxed but sometimes she does to much and sometimes not enough so I have to tweeze it to get it right where I want it. What would be your suggestions, please.
Dear Karen,
do you have a recommendation for a good working face primer?
I was using prep+prime from MAC for some time, but the results were disappointing. It didn’t hold very long and made my skin look greasy in the end.
Do you also have a suggestion for a good eyeshadow base?
I have hooded eyes with oily lids and because of that, my shadows don’t show much. I was using Urban Decay Primer Potion, but it dried out my lid. I have very sensitive skin, so its quite difficult for me to find the right products.
hi Karen, just wanted to thank you for making this blog.
I hope it won’t get closed.
My question is:
How can I make “down turned eyes” look normal?
I always look sad……..though I’m not..
I just hate it. Especially because people used to make fun of it.
I always use black and grey…but it still looks strange…
And what do you think about dermablend makeup? (for covering red cheeks)
First, many thanks…for all you did, and all you’re doing now.
Question. For us girls past 50, what can you recommend for thinning eyebrows? I am very fair-skinned, have brown eyes, and my hair color is Schwarzkopf 7-1, a dark blonde (lovingly referred to by my brother as Golden Retriever)?
Hello, Karen!
I have a simple question for you. My natural hair color is (I don’t know how to call it) dark blond/potatoe peel brown. My eyebrows are dark grey. I dyed my hair chocolate brown (with a hint of red), should I dye my eyebrows also or leave them as they are? Thanks.
First I would like to tell you that it is very nice and kind of you to share your knowledge with us , so thank you very much
I have a question for you . I have psoriasis on my head and I tried many things but it didn’t work . Could you please give me an advice to maybe hide it or attenuate it ?
P.S : I am not english so I’m sorry if I made some mistakes

I have dry, frizzy, wavy hair, but the wave seems to fall out in the back and is covered by a layer of fuzz, so I’v been forced to straighten it for 5 years now, and I wish that I could find a way to style my hair without tools, due to the damage it causes. Also when I straighten it, after about 3 hours it tends to frizz, any advise?

Hi Karen. I have two questions and i thank you in advance for your answers.
I have a very oily scalp and no matter what shampoo i try its always the same. My hair is long and naturally brown but i have been putting blonde highlights for years now and i am worried that i might damage my hair beyond repair. My hairdresser doesnt have an answer to this except different products of which i tried many already.
I am also in search of good foundation, my skin is normal it might get a little oily during summer. Anything you can recommed is greatly appreciated.

Comment question: Skin care, proper makeup question and what’s the best advice on type of make to use.
As a young girl, say 18 that is when I was allowed by my mother to wear makeup. I never really went heavy, cover girl powder mostly, eyeliner and some mascara and lipstick of that time. I was always a natural person. Didn’t like to cover my skin much with heavy foundations. As I got into my mid 40′s I began using cover girl foundation, then clinic skin care products.
Now that I am getting older, I find that foundations emphasize the wrinkles more. I sometimes go from Christian Dior to Lancome. I use a age defying primer before applying foundation. ( Question) What do I do when the color of my skin changes so often, should I use power or stick with a foundation and if so which is the best one? I know this is hard because you can’t see my face or skin to actually give the best advice, but anything at this point would make my day.
Hi Karen, it’s so good to be here. Since you’ve worked with Black hair, I just wanted to know what else I can do with getting my hair more manageable. I have mixed hair, curly but trashy, Black/Indian, and I’m so tired of the relaxing process. And I cannot stand the pulling and tugging when it comes to blow drying, and an hour under dryer with rollers, then it has to be straighten with a flat iron..just so sick it all. 3 hrs in the beauty parlor every time. Plus I’m going grey (very slowly, thank goodness) and for some reason my hair does not take to dyes which leaves it horribly trashy, and it breaks..a lot. I can only use a cellaphane, which doesn’t last very long. And oh, I have long hair, past the shoulder blade. Should I just go bald? This past summer, I decided not to relax my hair at all, so I have all this new growth and it’s annoying me. Is there anything I can use to have it curly, like Michaels. I know he had a Jheri curl at one point, but I don’t want to go there. Toooo greasy. I use Sebastian Wet after shampoo and conditioner, but that also leaves it dry after a while. I would love to have it curly, bouncy and natural, like a permanent wave. I see so many Black women in this style, and don’t know how they achieve that. My hairdresser suggests a Texturizer. Any advice?
I have a hair question that I was wondering if you can help me on. I am a breast cancer survivor (6 years now — yes!!). I have had 8 months of agressive chemotherapy which caused me to lose all my hair, etc. It took almost three years to come back. Before chemo my hair was naturally curly but not kinky, corkskrew curly which is what it came back as. I had been told that it would eventually go back to my normal hair, but like I said it has been six years since my last chemo treatment and my normal hair has not returned. So, I guess this will be my hair from now on. Not complaining — at least I’m still here and have hair. But it is so unmanagable. I’m not one to really spend a lot of time on it. But before I could just wash it and go and I’d have some nice soft curls. Now I still wash and go, but it is so kinky curly I can’t even get a comb through it. It only really looks nice when I first wash it, but the more I try to comb it out, the more fuzzy it gets and then it looks like a big fuzz ball. I like my curl and I don’t want to straighten it, but is there anything on the market that I can get to make it more manageable and will look nice from washing your hair to the next time I wash my hair? I am of Italian decent (I don’t know if that makes any difference, just that I have very thick hair). Thank you for your comments Karen.
Hey, thanks so much Karen. It’s been a long, long road. Once you are diagnosed with the big “C” it really does change your life. I will always have to live with the fact that it may come back, however, with the years of being cancer free it does get pushed to the back of your mind and it no longer controls you. I really only get nervous now when I have to go for my checkup. I know that God has healed me.
I wish my sister had been so lucky. She died of ovarian cancer which started as breast cancer two years ago at age 59. I miss her every day. She battled this desease off and on for 19 years.
I don’t know if you are a Michael Jackson fan, but I can truly say I know what that famly is going through. It’s just awful losing a brother or sister that you thought you’d grow old with and I certainly know what Kathryn is going through as I’ve watched my Mother lose a daughter at age 95. It almost killed her. I think about him pretty much every day as well.
Anyway enough of that. I just wanted to thank you for the blessings you sent my way. It is so nice to hear. Take care and have a great day.
Karen I have tried everything on the market to cover the dark areas under my eyes with no success. I also have the pigment / dark areas on my face, neck, chest area from Lupus. I don’t really care about the neck & chest but I have a few spots on my face which I can cover with heavier make-up. You where so great at covering Michael’s spots I thought you would be the best person to help me cover mine.
Thank you,
Shelly
Hi Karen!
I am very pale and have had a hard time finding a good, non-greasy compact to use. Can you suggest one? Also, how do you use blotting tissues? I’ve never tried them. Thanks!
I posted a question about the best make up for my 16 year old daughter a couple of months back and you suggested Make Up Forever. We recently made a trip to our local Sephora store and worked with an experienced and helpful sales associate and found the best product and color for my daughter’s skin! She is happy (mom, too!) with her look.
Thanks so much for all you do and continue to do.
Karen what do you think of the hair care system by Chaz Dean called Wen? Someone told me they had just started using it so I looked it up on the Internet. It said it doesn’t have harsh chemicals and is made with natural ingredients and contains no sodium laurel sulfate or other damaging detergents. But, it doesn’t lather… I’m thinking…the scalp. We are all conditioned (no pun) of relating lather with cleansing. I love lather, I love massaging the scalp…but I don’t want to keep damaging my hair either. Do you personally know anyone who uses it and have shared their opinion?
Dear Karen!
I need your advice. My cheekbones are often red and it looks ugly. Perhaps the capillaries are close? How can I solve this?
And yet … Advise how to get rid of dark circles under his eyes. How to lighten the skin under your eyes? Thank you in advance for you.
Karen, I´m a guy with long brown hair, and I´m struggling to make it look sexy. What do I do?
I often wear it in a ponytail, but I´m not happy about how it looks behind. I need to learn some new tricks and hairstyles. It´s the first time my hair is long.
Karen♥ Quick question? I think Michael’s eyeliner was permanent yes? It always look good either way…But I have a reunion Sat. and if you get this question today or tomorrow…I need a good eyeliner that will last through the day and into some dinner and dancing…Can ya help? What’s the best? Thanks girlfriend~
Happy Karen’s Day♥~Keep the Faith~LYM~
Hi, Karen, congrats your new blog!
I have a question about hair. How to keep the hair healthy and illiminate the split ends?
It is difficult to answer your question without you giving more details. But I will try. Split ends indicate damage that can come from many things, as overexposure to the elements like sun or cold. It could be from damaging products like bleaching agents, or harsh sprays. The best way to begin is from the inside. Good diet, supplements.
Then look into the products you are using. Then trim off the damaged ends.
Thank you Karen.
Karen,
I have a two part question.
Thank you!
I like Morrocan oil.
Hugs! God bless you.
thank you Karen…love u
Ok! Neck creams – are they really better than using moisturizer and anti-aging creams for the face/neck? If so, which ones do you recommend? Thanks!
Thank you so much for your time and help, Karen!
Karen, what eyeliner did Michael use? xx
I think it is time now to ask what eyeliner should you use.

Hi Karen,
I have very thick curly hair that is starting to turn gray. My hairdresser still thinks it’s too soon to color my hair completely so she has been giving me permanent color highlights to try and cover some of the gray but I still have more gray hair than I would like. She is worried that coloring my hair completely will dry it out too much. What is your advice?
Thanks!

Similar issue. Looking forward to response.
Thanks!
Thank you Karen
Thank you very much!!!
Sandy
Yes, fillers are very effective. It is important that you have someone who is very good at injecting them. Make sure you see their other clients
Thank you! =)
I have curly hair and it dries out very quickly. Any advise on products I could use or which are really good?
Thank you very much, Karen
Hi Karen,
Thank you for the wonderful blog:)
Thank you
I love you more!
Neyha ~~

Thank you, Ana
Hi K!
I have 2 questions!!
I like to rinse them once again, before I form the bristles in their proper position and let them air dry.
thanks! – I know, I do need to go to the dermo — there not really moles, there those red freckles, or beauty marks that some get… once I get to the docs, I’ll let you know the advice I get
Hi Karen,
I am a natural redhead with fair skin. I have always had trouble finding appropriate make-up colors (cheek, lip and eye) for my hair and skin tone. I basically stick to browns but would like to branch out a little. What colors do you recommend, both for day and night looks?
Heidi

Thank you Karen!!
Have a great day
Makeup Forever has some great waterproof liners. My favorite is Aqua Black
and some fabulous eye shadows. They are new.

Thank you! I just tried it and it is really nice ..and not too expensive..that is a real plus!
Thank you again for sharing your knowledge!
What do you think about foundation primers? Do they really help foundation look smoother?
Yes they do. Works great for smoothing out the look of large pores.

Hi Karen, I have 2 questions if you dnt mind:
1. What products would you reccomend for contour makeup of the nose. I have a straight nose that tends to puff up at the tip depending on weather, time of day and allergy season. I feel the need to contour 2 give it back the slimmer n pointier look but I dont know which products will hold up in this area.
2. Can you pleeeaase possibly give us the option of sending you our pic for your professional advice? where i live professionals r only into real heavy maquillage and tend to give u bad advice…just a thought.
Thanks n Have a lovely day…, sisi
Some time ago,I got stress induced exzema including on my scalp. Results clumps of hair falling out and general thinning of the hair.My hairdresser used KeraCare for dry and itchy scalp on me,and it worked wonders!!! the exzema went(also cause i figured out what caused it and brought it under control) and i have a full head of (to) thick hair again. You should be able to get this product at your salon, and don’t be surprised if they say if it’s for african ladies.I am not african, but it did the trick
sonja
Thank you so much for sharing this with us Sonja. Many products that are made for Black clients are excellent for everyone. I often use or suggest them for my clients with dry or curly hair. They are so pleasantly surprised, and would have NEVER considered that they would work for them. KeraCare is an excellent line for dry hair and scalp.

Sonja, I guess you solved my problem
Thank you so much
Neyha!
Hi Neyha,I hope it will do the same for you as it did for me.
Thank you peep. Now the next task is I have to find Kera care in India somewhere.. Wish me luck
Karen I bought the Loreal Pore Refiner (Derma Genese) what is your opinion of these products?, Are effective? thanks follow their advice.
Hello everybody,
I hope you are enjoying your week-end!
Karen, I have a big big problem, I can’t bear high heels, LOL
How I have to do to walk with it… Can somebody tell me?
ILY
I adore you, Gans. I have missed you. Your continuous struggle in heels always brings me joy. I apologize for making your challenge my giggles.
If you can’t bear them…don’t wear them. It is such a shame that something that looks so hot, is such an obstacle, isn’t it?
The first thing you must do is choose for comfort. I have actually found heels that fit well and can be comfortable. Then they must be secure on your feet. Then it’s practice, practice, practice.
LYM
I have missed you too.
I am happy my challenge to walk with high heels brings you joy.
Don’t apologize, I am glad to know it makes you laugh…-:)
I gonna try over and over again and one day I’ll succeed.
Thank you so much for your advices and your love, thank you for bringing hope, joy and love.
You don’t know how much you helped me…
I adore you more Karen xoxoxoxo
Gans, I love high heels too, and I found that those with a little platform midsole are way much comfortable than those who have plain sole. That platform midsole can be visible, ir hidden inside the shoe. You’ll understand when you see this pic ( sexy, huh?) Look for a soft lining and a good cushioning footbed.

Hope it helps ! <3
Hello Karen~
Need some advice on make up brands for my 16 year old daughter. We are African American. She has sensitive skin and is carmel-colored. Don’t like heavy make up. Just wants to enhance her natural beauty. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Hello dear Karen, Congrats for your blog!
My question:
I have a lot of freckles, dark brown reddish hair, so
white skin, green eyes and dark rings with freckles under the eyes with.
I´m 43 years old.
What is your advice for make up.
Thank you so much!
L.O.V.E. from Buenos Aires, Argentina
Viviana
Don’t even try and hide your freckles. I have a million. Aveeno has a tinted moisturizer called POSITIVELY RADIANT that is nice.
If you need a little extra under your you eyes for coverage try YSL Touche Eclat…my favorite.

Is it really good for the hair or maybe you know another receipe that is effective ?
thank you for taking the time for us!
Forgive me for “piggy-backing” on your question. This would be very interesting to know. Back in the day, my mother used beer when she washed her hair. Sometimes mixed with eggs. Yikes! I’ve never done this myself since I don’t care for the smell of beer, but she swore by it!
Thanks again Karen, and forever blessings!
beer gives your hair body and shine…
don’t wash and drive.
Excellent advice!!
This is one of my favorites Terax, Crema
http://www.beauty.com/bal/products/prod.asp?pid=155799&aid=336064&aparam=terax%20crema%20conditioner&scinit1=terax%20crema%20conditioner
Mayonnaise is good, but you smell like a salad. It has the egg and oil. I can’t imagine how hard all that with the honey would be to get out. I opt for a pump bottle of Crema.
thank you for the answer I’m gonna try with the honey, and then the mayonnaise (I’m french so it won’t bother me lol)
have a nice day !
Thank you so much!
I’ve tried Preparation H, but it gives very little results if any…. I find that hydro cortisone cream is much more effective
Hi Karen, May I ask if this “Argan Oil” (deriven from Moroccan Argan Trees) is the same as the Morrocan oil that you use ? Thank you

I have a beauty question for you. First, take a close look at my avatar. I’ll give you a minute…Did you look? Okay, then here’s my beauty question: HEEEELLLLLPPPPP?
Now you can!
LOVE you Karen!
<3Neena
In beauty school we learned to give a scalp treatment. We used a rubber comb (not sharp) and holding the comb on a slight angle, used circular motions, loosening the dead skin. It feels really good done correctly.
Renee Furterer has a wonderful scalp oil from their Karite line for dry scalp. This is good to gently rub into your scalp after removing the dry skin.
http://www.renefurterer.com/common/0,4320,12981751_15228569_0_en_US_342343890,00.html?vid=15228467
I only comb curly hair once, to remove tangles after washing. Between washings, I like to only use my hands, to fluff, detangle and style. Renee Furterer products are so much cheaper in France. I find they are well worth the price.
Thank you soo much Karen!
I can’t go to the sun ( i always wear high sun protection) and during winter the skin on my nose destroys itself and falls…Well it’s horrible……Do you have any idea or do i have to accept th
that i will have that acnee all my life……
Thank you for your answer
Fran.
Thank You Karen.

Hi Karen,
I asked you about natural remedies for dry skin recently.
Seriously, I have to joke, otherwise I sob.
LYM
Shae “Sunshine”
you know…I have not experimented much with the stuff in my pantry because there are so many wonderful products in my favorite beauty supply store.
*smile*
Karen, your hair is very lovely.
Hi Karen,
I’ve read all your beauty precious advices, now it’s time to put them in practice (more difficult !)
LYM
Nicole.
Dear Karen,
I really love reading your blog.
Thank you and have a wonderful weekend.
ILY
Elle
Big Kiss and have a wonderful day
Karen, do you prefer glossy lips or matte lips?
I love you a lots Karen, I hope that’s obvious!
Neena <3
LOL! Hope you don’t mind…I’m just curious, odd, and slightly insane, but you know that…
I almost feel like that is a small test to see who knows their roman numerals, haha

Hi Karen.. I have the best hair designer in the world. My hair is healthy, the color she uses makes my hair soft, and shiny..
However, when I use hairspray it makes my hair feel dry.. Can you recommend a good hairspray, medium hold?
Dear Karen
I am new on this community and I hope to make a right question…
I am looking for the perfect scent…it must be fresh, floreal and particular…I wear sometimes BAV but for me it’s too “Old Fashioned” and not good for summer period…what can you suggest?
Thank you so much,

Hi Karen,
I’ve been invited to my manager’s 40th birthday bash, and I’d like to wear eye make-up that looks evening-y to it.
I didn’t realise I was so run-down. x
Hi Karen!

Hi Karen!
I’ve got a question. What is the best clearing means for oily skin?
Thank you for your wonderful blog)))

<3 Samantha
Hello Karen!
My question to you is how can I that have black hair make it more browish/blonde? is it best to dy or bleach it?

Hi Karen, hope you’re doing fine..
I have a question …I am a brunette but I have a very pale skin..I never get any tan in summer …and I have always wondered what type of fondation I should choose..do I need to look for something very close to my natural color ? (when I do that I usually get a comment like “oh you’re from the adams family??..lol) or do I need to find something darker? I have also tried that but never got a natural result out of it….I should also say that it’s not for an everyday use but for a stage use..
Thanks again Karen!
Hi Karen!
Misty
Hi Karen,
How are you? I just wanna ask you if you can tell me what line of make-up you use, because there are just so many. What’s the best one?
Thank u!
Hi Karen,
Do you have any tips for long lasting lipstick coverage? I don’t like using matte lipsticks, too dry and stiff.
Thanks!
Karen,
What is the key to a perfectly shaped brow?

Thank you for sharing and LYM ♥
hi Karen, just wanted to thank you for making this blog.
Hello, Karen.
This aging thing really bites!
Take care
Hello, Karen!
I have a simple question for you. My natural hair color is (I don’t know how to call it) dark blond/potatoe peel brown. My eyebrows are dark grey. I dyed my hair chocolate brown (with a hint of red), should I dye my eyebrows also or leave them as they are? Thanks.
Hi Karen !
First I would like to tell you that it is very nice and kind of you to share your knowledge with us , so thank you very much
I have a question for you . I have psoriasis on my head and I tried many things but it didn’t work . Could you please give me an advice to maybe hide it or attenuate it ?
P.S : I am not english so I’m sorry if I made some mistakes

hey karen,
I have dry, frizzy, wavy hair, but the wave seems to fall out in the back and is covered by a layer of fuzz, so I’v been forced to straighten it for 5 years now, and I wish that I could find a way to style my hair without tools, due to the damage it causes.

Any advice?
Hi Karen,
I have a hair question that I was wondering if you can help me on.

Patti,
I know I’m not the Karen you are expecting but I Just want to say congratulations on your 6 years as a breast cancer survivor. God Bless You. ♥
Take care and have a great day.

p.s. Now if I could only control my hair!!!!!
Thanks!
Hello Karen~

Help!
